This is the second in a series of reflective blogs which will focus on the film reviews of ohthatfilmblog.com. The second being a review of ‘Suicide Squad‘. They start the review off by saying that they aren’t going to compare DC to Marvel as they don’t have enough knowledge of the films to do so. They also were excited for the films release just as I was. So when they go on to say how bad it the film is, it only drives the point forward a lot harder.

“Oy vey, this is a bad, bad, bad movie, and the most frustrating thing is that amongst the mess, you can see the bones of something that long ago might have been promising.” This is a point which could be made for a lot of terrible films but more recently and specifically, superhero movies. There’s something to me about current superhero films that to me they all provide the same thing, 2 hours of brainless entertainment, only to be annoyed at the end when they tease the next one, not even giving the viewer a time to feel enclosure on the story. But Suicide Squad suffers from a lot more than that. One of the biggest problems of the film was the editing or perhaps the editor just had nothing but feces to work with so he did the best he could. “The songs are enjoyable but hold absolutely no message or meaning for their chosen characters, and feel rather like a band aid of nostalgia being applied to a film that has been schizophrenically edited to within an inch of its life.” The worst part of the editing in my opinion were the songs and how the were placed within the film. As said above from ogthatfilmblog, they hold no value to what the character is, and just seems like a response from the success of Guardians of the Galaxy. Below is a clip from Suicide Squad.

Another aspect of the film which can only induce cringe is the acting. as ohthatfilmblog put it “the frustrating aspect is that some of the performances, namely Will Smith as Deadshot and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, are genuinely good, but any positive work put in by the actors is immediately voided by the absolutely terrible dialogue that they are forced to bring to life”. Even the joker, one of the greatest comic villains of all time was utterly pointless in the film, and no thanks to Jarde Leto who in recent years has just won an oscar.

Overall everyone should avoid seeing this film. Even if you’re a comic book nerd you have to be pretty braindead or at least unaware of better films that have tackled the same style to enjoy this movie for what the film makers wanted. Perhaps on a re watch it becomes one of my favourite genre of films, the so bad its good genre.
